doing rain

Last year at this time Queensland was about to experience the full brunt of Mother Natures’ unequivocal ability to prove just how powerful she is, by sending flooding rains into the area that resulted in the death and destruction of immense proportions. I do have ideas about why this event and others like it happen, but that’s for another time and another forum, today I would love to talk to you about ‘doing rain’.

What does this mean. doing rain? Many years ago I read wonderful consciousness raising books by Stuart Wilde and in one of them he mentions having the ability to ‘do rain’. Now this is slightly different in chilly Britain, which is where he is from than in Australia, however the inference is the same for all. ‘Doing Rain’ is a way of handling rain whether it is cold, windy, hot or heavy, Stuart’s advice is that it is water, you’re only going to get wet, so stop running, stop avoiding and just go about your life and get wet.

My wonderful fellow Queenslanders’ know how to ‘do rain’ as we all got out floods, mud and destruction and all and helped one another to clear, clean, donate food, clothes and other sundries and offered our homes to those who had none.

A whole new year is about to start for all of us and 2012 is going to be another year of huge shifts in technology, business practices, world connectivity and communication, information sharing and the way we live our lives. My question to you is:

Are you allowing all this constant change to shut you down?”

This is a really important question when making plans and visioning your new year goals and outcomes. If you are stuck in old holding patterns and afraid of the huge shifts of the past 2 years in business and technology you could be clinging to old ways of doing business and even life, through fear of in adequacy, or change or not knowing how to ‘do rain’.

Doing rain is all about knowing full well it is raining, and understanding you are going to get wet, perhaps not look your best and going about your business anyway, even acting as if nothing is wrong, that wet is the ‘new black’ and even enjoying the experience. Doing rain in business and life, is all about getting yourself damp, or even wet and perhaps not looking your best as you move forward and doing it anyway.

The lessons of doing rain have helped me so much over the past few years as tragedy and grief played a huge part in my family life in more than one area, as I lost two baby grandsons to heart defects, my mum had a bilateral mastectomy and other incidences involved in these sad experiences impacted my life, time and emotional and physical health. The lesson of doing rain meant that although I was hit hard by grief, tiredness and low physical health during this time, I may have slowed, I may have missed some events and opportunities and chances – I didn’t stop, I went ahead through this 21/2 year stormy season with an eye on my goals and kept my business going and growing.

dance in the rainGetting wet can even be an enlightening experience as we realise that we didn’t melt, that there is often someone around with a helpful umbrella and that drying out is just as easy as reaching for that helpful towel. Perhaps you might even learn how to ‘dance in the rain.’ The enlightenment I gained through all this about my business, and believe me there were many more personal ones, is that I yearn to teach and to empower others using the experiences of my life and education and you will see next year how this is going to change what I am doing now into where I want to be.

So as you’re making all those plans for next year, to be successful, grow your business, move forward past your blocks and seize each and every day, how about you add in one more intention to ‘do rain,’ splash in those puddles, get a little muddy and just get on with it!

Move forward with your plans no matter what else is going on in your life, no matter what fears come up for you as you do, aim a little higher than you normally would even if you’re going to get a little wet and learn to dance with enthusiasm and joy in the rain.

    Hi Annie,
Love blogs that use analogies. Also love blogs that are written by people who can write well and have much knowledge to share. You are one of those people.

Sometimes ‘doing the rain’ means accepting it’s time to buckle down and get organised (inside and out of the rain) or even jump under the doona and not come out for days!
I found it really interesting when we moved from the middle of drought effected NSW – where the only water we seemed to see was lapping at the levy back – to come to the Sunny Coast, where we have our regular roads flooding and my purple umbrella doesn’t seem to leave my side in the warmer months!
It’s all good fun, with a bit of planning and an innovative outlook – you just move through life with a smile knowing your car will get a wash and the water tanks fill for the winter months! :)
